The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah was a significant peace agreement between the Muslims of Madinah and the Quraysh of Makkah in 6th Hijri. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions set out for Umrah but were stopped near Hudaybiyyah. Instead of conflict, both sides chose negotiation and signed a truce. This treaty became a turning point in Islamic history.
The agreement stated that Muslims would return to Madinah without performing Umrah that year. However, they were allowed to come back the next year and stay in Makkah for three days. Both parties agreed to avoid war for ten years, ensuring peace and safety for all. This showed the Prophet’s (ﷺ) wisdom in prioritizing peace over immediate conflict.
Though some companions were initially saddened by the terms, the Sulah Hudaybiyyah proved to be a blessing. It gave Muslims the chance to spread Islam peacefully, and many embraced the faith during this time. Within two years, the number of Muslims grew rapidly, and Makkah eventually welcomed Islam. This treaty highlighted patience, wisdom, and trust in Allah’s plan.
